De Roe

De roe (A rod) of bundled twigs - also called a "gard" - was not only used by Sinterklaas. A naughty child would traditionally get "Love blows" with, "not out of hatred." In 1820 the rod in schools was officially banned, but Sinterklaas and his helpers kept it threatening with it until about 1980.

  1. That does look painful...think I would behave myself...or at least try to. LOL

    1. It can be painful if you use a little too much force and it takes some cleaning afterwards if you break the skin to avoid infection.
Still with kids "love taps" were used. Now it's for kids forbidden, thank God.

  2. Spanking was practiced in the small rural school where I had my first teaching assignment. Mostly used for the older kids, my second graders were much too sweet to have to worry.

    1. I hope they have banned corporal punishment for kids some time ago in the US.

  4. Sorry to say there there are still states that use corporal punishment. I remember back when I was in 7th grade I had just transferred to a new catholic school and looking back this teacher(nun) was downright abusive. It's a memory long remembered and to this day I can still name the kids that suffered the most and wonder how it affected them later on.
