Station of Haarlem

One of the most beautiful station in the Netherlands is in the capital of the province North Holland: Haarlem. (To all Americans, yes in 1658 Dutch settlers named Harlem in Uptown New York). It's beauty is stunning. I once spent three hours looking at all small details of this station...
(I love trains and railwaystations, and the tracks, and the sounds, and the smell...)

The original station building of Haarlem was replaced in 1906-1908 by a new building by Mr.  D.A.N. Margadant.  Typical for the station are the two entrance and exit buildings and the location of the waiting rooms and restaurant on the island platform. It is the only station in the Netherlands in the Art Nouveau or Jugendstil style, and one of the most striking buildings in the city of Haarlem. The building has many tile panels.

Waiting room, first class

One of the few major changes since the construction of the station building, the construction of the third platform along rail 8 in 1953, whose architecture contrasts with the rest of the building.

The station is used several times for filming, such as if two drops of water from Fons Rademakers in 1963, for The Girl with the Red Hair Ben Verbong (1981), for Black Book by Paul Verhoeven in 2005 and for the American action movie Ocean's Twelve of Steven Soderbergh in 2004 which the Haarlem platform was supposed to look like Amsterdam Central station .

The buildings stood on the big central platform, in addition to offices, waiting rooms and also other traveller facilities, including two rooms for the station restaurant. One of these buildings has since 2011 used as a small library with waiting area and coffee machine.

On September 15, 2008 there was a big party to celebrate the centenary of the current station of Haarlem.

    1. It's so pretty you cannot believe your eyes when you are in the train and you drive into this station. It looks like time has stopped.

      Thank you for your comment,
