Christmas Carols, Latin

Gaudete

Gaudete is also a song I know so well from the Christmas songs my daughter used to sing in the choir. I chose the performance of a children's choir, because it brings back so many memories....

Latin English
Gaudete, gaudete! Christus est natus
Ex Maria virgine, gaudete!
Rejoice, rejoice! Christ is born
(Out) Of the Virgin Mary – rejoice!
Tempus adest gratiæ
Hoc quod optabamus,
Carmina lætitiæ
Devote reddamus.
The time of grace has come—
what we have wished for,
songs of joy
Let us give back faithfully.
Deus homo factus est
Natura mirante,
Mundus renovatus est
A Christo regnante
.
God has become man,
(With) nature marvelling,
The world has been renewed
By Christ (who is) reigning.
Ezechielis porta
Clausa pertransitur,
Unde lux est orta
Salus invenitur.
The closed gate of Ezekiel
Is passed through,
Whence the light is raised,
Salvation is found.
Ergo nostra concio
Psallat iam in lustro;
Benedicat Domino:
Salus Regi nostro.
Therefore let our preaching
Now sing in brightness
Let it give praise to the Lord:
Greeting to our King.

  1. Very nice! I'd only ever heard Steeleye Span's version and that is really only the chorus. I always figured there must surely be a little more to it...

    1. There is more to it, indeed Jz...Old words in a dead language, yet so alive today, sung by children with a future for each of them...

The song is so beautiful, don't you think? In any version.
