Gaudete
Gaudete is also a song I know so well from the Christmas songs my daughter used to sing in the choir. I chose the performance of a children's choir, because it brings back so many memories....

Gaudete, gaudete! Christus est natus Ex Maria virgine, gaudete! | Rejoice, rejoice! Christ is born (Out) Of the Virgin Mary – rejoice! |
Tempus adest gratiæ Hoc quod optabamus, Carmina lætitiæ Devote reddamus. | The time of grace has come— what we have wished for, songs of joy Let us give back faithfully. |
Deus homo factus est Natura mirante, Mundus renovatus est A Christo regnante. | God has become man, (With) nature marvelling, The world has been renewed By Christ (who is) reigning. |
Ezechielis porta Clausa pertransitur, Unde lux est orta Salus invenitur. | The closed gate of Ezekiel Is passed through, Whence the light is raised, Salvation is found. |
Ergo nostra concio Psallat iam in lustro; Benedicat Domino: Salus Regi nostro. | Therefore let our preaching Now sing in brightness Let it give praise to the Lord: Greeting to our King. |
Very nice! I'd only ever heard Steeleye Span's version and that is really only the chorus. I always figured there must surely be a little more to it...
ReplyDeleteThere is more to it, indeed Jz...Old words in a dead language, yet so alive today, sung by children with a future for each of them...

Music has a wonderful way of letting us recall memories otherwise forgotten.
ReplyDeleteSo true, Leigh. Just the first notes of the song are enough to remember....

I love Gaudete. The version I have is sung by the Medieval Babes
ReplyDeleteI always smile when I hear the American accent of those very pretty ladies.... They sure are pretty.
DeleteThe song is so beautiful, don't you think? In any version.
